Hi,
My friend and I have built a computer (more him than myself), and there is an issue when you switch it on.
The issue is that when you press the power button it's goes to start up, but then switches off, then usually switches on again as normal (does a proper start up).
Every computer i have had before never did this?
The other day it did the start and stop about 15 times before i switched it off and unplugged the power.
After waiting i plugged the power back in and and it came up stating that attempts to overclock had failed, even though it has not been overclocked??
If anyone has had this before, or knows of it, please help.

Many thanks in advance

A few computers with intels 875, and 975 chipsets used to do that when they were setting the FSB strap, it would be on, off, pause, on and then boot normally. Sometimes motherboard manufacters sorted this with bios updates.

However I dont know of any current boards that do this.

The warning of failed overclock isnt anything to worry about, often that message can pop up after a computer has been powered down during the power on self test.

Power cycling 15 times in a row... thats just wrong, I would probably strip the system down to as minimal config as possible, 1 single memory stick, the cpu, and if possible a very basic GPU (I always keep an old GPU for emergency use), and see if the system boots properly like that, before restoring the computer to its full spec one piece at a time to see when it starts going nuts.

cheers

Thanks for the advice, i've now brough new parts to upgrade and if it carries on i will do what you have said.
I will be re building my old set up at a later date so will do the process you have describe then.
Thank you again

Nah, this isn't anything to worry about. Both my 775 Asus boards did this with my 8800gt installed, but neither did it with it removed or with a 9600gso. No idea why this was.

My current board shows me nothing but a blank screen for a good 15 seconds after I push the on button. Computers are strange beasts.

Repeatedly trying to post and failing isn't so good though, I'd want to try the system with a different psu. Good luck
