i being using a adsl line for my internet 4 all all the time i have had the internet, and now that i comin to the end of the contract i am thinking 2 movin onto a cable provider. the reason being is that most of my mates are on a cable line and say that its much faster and more reiable as the line is just designated for the internet. what makes me confused is that i spoke 2 1 off my cousins 2day and he says that it doesnt make a diffrence.

i not really a computer expert and all this megabytes talk gets me confused, i say that i am a heavy internet usage with my 2 sisters also using the internet constantly

what is really better ?
or are they all the same

with cable, i think it depends on your area and how oversubscribed it may be.

with ADSL, i think its the quality of the lines inside your house, distance from the excahnge and quality of the line between your house and the exchange that makes a difference

it may not be possible to say which is the best for you as cable maybe very poor where you live or you maybe the only person using cable.

i thought will adsl it depends on how far u are from the telephone exchange
i think cable providers claim that it doesnt depend how far u are, u will always get a constant speed
not 100% sure though

Speak to people on the same street with cable - should give you a good idea about the quality of service before you sign up...

ps3ud0

Virgin Media do a good cable service (ignoring they're capping) and they provide a fiber optic cable to your doorstep from the exchange, this then gets divided up into copper cables for the routers (and TV boxes should you have one). the fiber optic cable pretty much removes the limiting affect distance has on the speed of a line.

ADSL uses ordinary copper cable's which over long distances can degrade the signal strength.

you must however check if your area can get Virgin Media's Cable internet. to check this enter your postcode into here

They don't provide fibre to your door step.
Fibre to the cabinet then coax to your door step.

oh yes my mistake. still the cabinets are usually very close to your home, for example mines down the street, and the distance is too short for the signal to be degraded.

The ADSL line to my house was rubbish and 512Mb was the max speed.

I moved to 2Mb cable and it's a hell of a lot quicker and meets my needs nicely. If I thought I would use it, I can upgrade the speed for an extra monthly cost.

Use of the internet constantly doesn't make you a heavy user. Downloading large files (movies, software) and watching youtube/iPlayer constantly would bump up your usage.

There are differences, but if you're not sure about megabyte talk, I'm sure you wouldn't notice the difference yourself and then you need to consider cost effectiveness for your needs.
