like most folk here i will be switching my system over to a quad-core, but do i need to buy another psu.

system will be

cpu - q6600 G0 energy saver
mobo - BFG nforce 680 sli
mem - 4 gigs
gfx - bfg 8800 gtx
h/d - 2 raptors and a 3rd drive
plus 2 dvd roms
and 7 fans

power supply is the tagan 480w?

need more juice?

id say the 620 corsair hx would be more than enough considering ive seen them running sli crossfire setups

If that's the ATX2.0 version with two PCI-E power plugs, I would say the PSU would be fine as it's a good quality unit. Once you start overclocking the CPU and 8800GTX heavily, you'll be pushing it pretty close to it's limits. I'd go for a new PSU as the above have mentioned.

Quad core + 680i = poor overclocking

Are you going sli? If not get a p35, best out there for quad.

Also, 4gb ram doesnt work too well with 680i, it drops back to a set speed (6400 iirc)

No need for a new psu, current one should handle it fine :)

I went to a Q6600 and kept my Tagan 430W PSU......not for long!

My system comprises Q6600 and a BFG8800GTS, 4G Geil DDR2 and 3 hard drives. The PSU failed (or should I say fried) after about 4 weeks. Could be coincidence, but since I could not overclock the quad I suspected the PSU was marginal.

I now have a Corsair 620W and all is fine again and I can get the quad to 3G no problem.
