Switzerland today voted in a referendum to ban face coverings like the burqa and niqab in public.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-56314173

They are now banned in France, Belgium, Netherlands, Hungary, Austria, Denmark and Switzerland.

I must say I am surprised by this. I was under the impression that Switzerland was one of the most tolerant countries in Europe. Obviously not.

Do you think they will be the last European country to ban them, or will there be more bans across Europe?

I don't think it should be banned, if I want to walk around in a balaclava all day long then I should be allowed. What I think should be banned is the forced repressive use of a facemask by a group of people on females to signify authority / dominance based on historical fiction.
Is banning that the same as banning the device they use to achieve this?
I often wonder how the Muslim men react to these bans. Some are so strict with their religion, that it simply cannot be allowed for their wives to go out without one.

If they’re illegal, does the Muslim man react by accepting it, or making his wife a prisoner in her own home?

That part worries me somewhat.

whats wrong with wanting to keep your own culture and values?

look at what it takes to become a swiss citizen

loads of Turkish people lived in the same quarter as I, it's not like the countries racist
I never said nationalism is racist. I’m a nationalist. But is an extremely small number of women wearing face coverings in observance of their religion really going to negatively affect the countries culture and values?

Yorkshire should have a parliament. The budget would be great.

“I tell thee ya won’t get any munny outta me. It’s all been used in the Yorkshire tea and Whippet allowance. Now, where’s ma flat cap, too expensive t’put heating on”.

So you want to oppress them yourself?
Problem is how many of them don’t want to wear one but are forced to.

Anyway, any ban would be impossible to enforce in places like Tower Hamlets and Newham. Too many to police, and a lot of them insist on following sharia law and don’t recognise our laws.

As has been said in this thread (and I’m sure I’ve read something similar. Lots choose to wear it themselves. You don’t stop somebody from doing something by forcing them to do another thing. If they want to wear it based on archaic traditions, you need to educate, inform and give them equal opportunities.
Educate, reform blah blah blah.

This is Islam we’re talking about. There is no reform. It is flat out rejected.
