I am taking out my trusty old 5870 and putting in a 6970. Now normally I would just swop them out and re-download the latest drivers and run them over the top. Well I think that is what I did last time but I cannot remember for sure as I had been in the pub all day.

I am sure some will recommend using a driver sweeper but please tell me, whats the safest way to do this without encountering any likely problems?

Running Win8 64 if it helps.

AMD have their own tool for that. Personally, I just install over the top

Linky

DO NOT USE THAT TOOL ON WINDOWS 8!!

It is not meant for windows 8 and does more harm than good, its only supported for Windows 7.

Just uninstall the drivers normally via add/remove programs, restart, then download the new drivers and install them. Nothing else is needed.
