A historic sycamore tree which stood in a dramatic dip in Hadrian's Wall appears to have been felled overnight, the national park has said.

I wonder if it's a Farmer that's done it, and was hoping people would blame Storm Agnes bringing it down

Police have vowed to bring anyone responsible for the felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap Tree to justice 'swiftly and appropriately'. Officers are treating the overnight incident as a deliberate act of vandalism, launching a full investigation.

A range of inquiries are currently ongoing, with the support of partners - as police look to identify the full circumstances surrounding the damage. They are also hopeful of identifying those involved.
