Hi all,

I have just installed Symantec Backup Exec 2010, it's installed MS SQL Express, is this to store the backup data in the databases?

I am abit confused, I just created a mock backup job to schedule to backup data on a partition every 2 days, however it hasnt prompted me as to where this data will be backed up to and won't let me select a location?

I wish to backup the data to a particular drive partition

Any idea's?

You need to have a backup to disk folder setup(on the devices tab) then select said devices in the "device and media" part of the job setup.

Also I think SQL is for Jobs and job history.

From what I remember, BE uses SQL to store its job/backup libraries etc, not your backup data. When you create a new job you should be able to select "Device and Media" under Destination, on the right it will show a drop down box to choose the backup device (Tape drives, B2D etc depending on what you have connected or setup). If you then go back to the BE interface you can choose "Devices" from the top menu, expand everything and tell us what you have listed in there. Do you remember setting up any Backup-to-Disk folders?

I don't remember setting up any Backup-to-Disk folders no.

Right ok so SQL is a requirement for the libraries

I will give the Device and Media route a try and see how I get on :) Probably won't be today but sometime tomorrow

Thanks chaps :)

Cool thanks, I got that working, I am quite impressed with the write speed of the backup job, I backed up 20GB within about 9 minutes, where as Acronis was taking about 35 minutes on high prority to do the same job!

Only thing is, how do I overwrite the backup file each time it starts the full backup job? I don't want it to create a new one each time, I want it to find the existing backup file, and either overwrite it or delete before creating a new one.

Under the job properties, there is a drop down box that says "Media Set - Keep Data Infinitely, do not overwrite" this is selected, there is no other option in this drop down box, however there is tick boxes below saying "Overwrite Media" which is selected, however this does not do anything, each time a backup is run it creates a new backup file.

Any idea's?

You need to make your own media set(media tab in BE). If you are only keep one copy then set the overwrite period to something like 12 hours (if the backups daily), once you've done that change the backup to overwrite media which is in the 'device and media' part of the job setup.
