I got a desktop and a laptop and was wondering what program is best to successfully sync them up? would they need to be on a network to do so?

cheers

yeh ive got droppy ) i need more than 2gb though. dont want to pay for it either :p

is there anything offline as it were? so if i go to uni and work on laptop i can sync them to my desktop at home etc

If you want something offline you'd need a USB pen or some kind of storage like that. Then run Robocopy to make sure that both laptop and desktop have mirrored copies of the files.

Or just run Robocopy off your laptop/desktop.

wow from what ive just read it looks mighty complicated :s http://blogs.techrepublic.com.com/window-on-windows/?p=777

ok ideally i want just one folder to be copied with many sub folders inside. so when i get home is there any way of it just connecting my lappy via wifi and it will auto sync with my desktop folder named the same also? perhaps a bit like what happens when u plug in your ipod or iphone?

thanks in advance

It isn't that bad. I could put a Robocopy script together for you. :) I think you might be able to get something like a .bat file to run "automatically" when you plug a USB pen into a machine but to get something like Robocopy or some other syncing software to run automatically when you connect your laptop to your wifi network sounds like serious programming. :p

SyncToy 2.0 is also worth a look. You can schedule it to run whenever you want through Windows Task Scheduler or you can run it manually.

I use a number of File Syncing systems, each for different jobs and they all work great for me.

1.) FreeFileSync - I use this to do a mirror copy of my <Username> folder onto an external hard disk drive. I run this every once in a while when everything is working fine. The first run takes ages as there is so much to copy but every other time it only copies new or updated files.

2.) Windows Live Sync - I use this to sync a number of different folders over to my netbook from my desktop pc. It must be online to do the syncing but it does not keep a copy online so you cannot access your files anywhere whcih is not an issue for me. It works flawlessly and each time I ahve both my desktop and netbook switched on then the files sync pretty much instantly and without me knowing!

3.) Drop box - I use this more sparingly and just pop a few files into my dropbox so I can access them elsewhere on another pc or send files to friends. I see Windows Live Sync and Dropbox different as drop box just deals with one particular folder. Windows Live Sync allows you to syncronise multiple folders anywhere on any pc.

Hope this helped

Neil

Hello Neil,

thanks for the pointer, I didn't see this thread! :o

I'm looking for some software to basically sync user data between a laptop and a desktop, not emails as thats already sorted but more then contents of my documents (MS Word, Access file, Photos, Music etc) . .

From whats been said so far Windows Live Sync seems to fit the bill, I will have to read up on that in a bit . . .

Any other nifty software worth a mention?

Hi,

Did you get sorted Wayne?

I am also looking for a sync program to sync 30gb of files across 3 pc's.

Dropbox would be ideal but I don't want or need online access so is there anything similar?

Try Windows Live Sync. This syncs over the net but doesn't give you online access to the files - Works perfectly once you figure it out.

No Mate,

but my boss/mate hasn't mailed to mention it every single week so unless I stop playing around with my overclocked computers and start *really* looking into it I shall get hen-pecked to death! :p

basically the guy want's to be in the office less and sit at home on a laptop working with Outlook Express and Microsoft access Database but when he goes to the office he would want to sit at his desktop/workstation and carry on working with Outlook Express and Microsoft access . . .so in essence I just need to find a way to *sync* a bunch of data-files from his laptop to the PC and then from the PC back to the laptop . . .

Whether he is sitting at work or sitting at home he will always have the most recent data-files on the machine he is using . . .

The data-files size is probably only about 450MB in total so I'm hoping I can find a solution that *syncs* via Wifi . . . the other personal My Documents is large @ 45GB so I'm not seeing an easy way to keep that synced . . .

Sorry for the waffle but hopefully someone in the know can let me know if these requirements are a pipe-dream or easily done?

Thanks! :)
