What's the best way to do this? Laptop would need to be over wireless but I don't need to sync large files to the laptop. Is there a program that does this for you?

You need to be a little clearer in what you are trying to do.

Do you want to sync files on a laptop/desktop with an external HDD, or sync a laptop AND a desktop with an external HDD?

I personally use Robocopy which is a built-in Windows tool on Vista/7 and can be downloaded free for XP. It requires the use of batch files though, so maybe not everyone's cup of tea.

SyncBack is a favourite around these parts too.

Want to sync up game saves from computer to laptop, make daily backups of documents/photos to HDD, sync up photo library on laptop and computer. Stuff like that. I'll check out Robocopy and SyncBack, thanks.

Syncback will be easiest, especially if you have a lot of different things flying back and forth etc. Robocopy does all the same, you just need to learn how to use it.

Choice is yours really.
