Syncing SIM contacts from phone to Google on Hero/Android?

I have exhausted my googling skills, I don't appear to be able to figure out how to get my SIM contacts (which I have successfully imported to my phone) to Sync to Google. All contacts I have added since I have had the phone have successfully synchronized ok.

Anyone been able to do this? Sites seem to suggest it should "just happen".

Have you tried going to the SIM contact, pressing menu and press 'save contact to'?
