Syncronising files across home network

Hello.

I am wanting to sync my files between my laptop and desktop so that any changes made to files on either will be reflected in the other (would be good to do with outlook calender and firefox bookmarks as well).

I have heard that windows live sync will do something like this but ideally I dont really want yet another application running all the time in the background (especially on the laptop). I think I could also do something along these lines with 'offline files' from within windows but then I think the files all end up in a single folder (briefcase style).

What I want is for my pictures to appear in the my pictures folder but to change automatically when a new picture is added to the my pictures folder on the other computer.

Think this is possible? Any help would be great.

By the way this does not have to happen over the internet. I would actually prefer it if it just happened across my home network (should be faster). Thanks.

How about getting a NAS and running it on the network? You would still need both PC's switched on, and it may just be easier to just keep all files on one PC (The desktop for instance) and then just linking to the folder via shares.

I dont really want to do shares becuase if I turn the desktop off / take laptop on train etc then I wont be able to get anything.

NAS would have course be the ultimate for in the home but dont have the cash at the moment.

I think I am going to use synctoy. I just have to share the data partition on the laptop and dont have to have the appliaction running on the laptop only on the desktop.

Hopefully should work.

Thanks a lot for replying.

Why not go the NAS route, and turn on Offline folders on your laptop?

This will keep the laptop synced with teh NAS and still give you all the data on the go
