I'm thinking about buying a DS413J and have a couple of questions if anyone has one?

I basically want to install 4 drives, use 2 for pictures with one a back up of the other. I will then use the other 2 for media but if possible not in raid.

Is this possible?

Also am I correct in reading that for instance I can have 2x2tb for say the photo HDD's and a different size for my media?

Thanks in advance :)

Yes fine, you want to create two volumes.

Not sure why you would do that though, unless you are really pushed for space! I would put all 4 drives in RAID5, assuming they are all the same size. If they are mixed sizes then use Synolgy Hybrid Raid - SHR.

I was just thinking of using 1 drive for all my photo's. A second drive to back up those photos for redundancy.

The other two drives don't require backing up at all and I would just fill with my films and music etc.

Does that make sense or am I coming at this completely wrong :D

I've never used raid and all my current photo backing up is on an internal drive and backed up to an external. Which can be time consuming.

It makes sense, yes, but if you are planning on using one drive to backup one other drive... instead, using RAID 5, you can use that one backup drive to backup all 3 drives if that makes sense. Bonus!

With the NAS, you create a RAID volume so it looks like one big storage space. Then you create folders within that, so Photos, Movies, Music, Downloads etc

Thanks Monkeyspank, I've tried to find operational youtube videos of the DS413J on youtube but all I can find is unboxing and really poor reviews that are unboxings :D

What you describe is easy to do with the synology disk management software?

As monkeyspank says Raid 5 or Synology's own hybrid raid will give you a large pool of space that you can create as many shares as you like on with the required fault tolerance. Take a look here and try the raid calculator
