Would really appreciate any advice or help please :)

I currently have 4 external hard drives with all my data on. Some drives are backups from others drives.

I have just bought the nas drive mentioned and wondering how I go about adding each hard drive with data on, with some form of raid setup?

Not sure if it needs formatting first then to add the data or if It will work its magic with each drive I add?

So just to be clear! i currently have 4 hard drive 3TB with data on and want to add them in a raid configuration without loosing any data to my new Synology DiskStation DS1515+

Help!:)

It's years since I've played with a Synology NAS but you're almost certainly going to need backup the data first. In fact you should have backups anyway.

You're also going to loose a significant amount of storage space to implement any useful version of RAID.

Use NAS drives.

Buy WD Red drives to put in the Synology.

Keep your existing drives as backups.

If you do decide to use your existing drives, you'll need to format each drive, individually. Then you'll have to expand the volume as you add each drive, not something you want to do doing it you only have 1 copy of the data..

Bite the bullet and buy WD Reds. Personally I'd get a UPS for the NAS too. The APC BX700Ui is what I have for mine, has a USB lead to talk to the Synology unit.

I have a couple of Synology NAS solutions; DS 411j and DS1515+. What you are asking for is impossible if you bang the drives into your DiskStation, striping with RAID or SHR is destructive to existing data.

I would strongly suggest (as other posters have recommended) you purchase the specialised WD Red NAS drives they are just the ticket as well as being certified to be used on DiskStations.

They are about £200 each for the 6TB version, remember you will need minimum of 3 - you have 4 x 3TB = 12TB however you want RAID or SHR which means you will need a failover drive so 3 x 6TB will accommodate your existing data of 12TB and the failover for RAID or SHR. But that approach leaves you no room to grow from Day 1 so looks like you need 4 x 6TB.
