OK, I bought the DS111 after reading so many glowing reports about synology in general. I only need a single bay version to stick a 2TB HD in and share the files on my network. Not interested in raid and I'm happy to make a backup of the drive by connecting an eSata drive to the DS111.

First thing I noticed is that despite most reviews saying how great the UI is, it's actually not and I'm finding it very complicated. All i wanted to do was share the drive on my network and set user permissions but it just seems over complicated.

The big problem i'm having at the moment is the DS111 does't seem to sleep let alone wake up and I can't find any info on this at all. I basicly want to be able to wake it up (WOL) and after say 20mins of inactivity it automaticly goes to sleep. Can anyone help me on this?

At the moment i feel I've wasted my money and will probably sell it and go back to using my shared drive in my HTPC.

I'm on Virgin 50mb Cable and have a Asus RT-N56U Router and my network is Gigabit.

I Want to be able to wake up and put to sleep the DS111 and share the drive on my home network which consists of Multiple Windows 7 PC's, OSX, Xbox 360 and PS3

It would also be nice to access it from the internet when I'm away from home.

Help!!!!

I don't think the Synology's can do proper wake on lan. Thing is though, they are so low power anyway, plus they will spin the drives down just like a PC will do when no-one is accessing them that you might as well just leave it on anyway. It does have a timer so you can set it to turn off at night and on in the morning if you really want to save the pennies on your electric bill.

Sharing the drive (or rather creating a folder and sharing that) isn't a problem though and is really very simple as far as I can recall (don't have one at the moment). You can access it from the internet just fine too (via FTP or web interface) if you set it up correctly.

It doesn't come any better than synology really. If it really is too complex for you, then you could always go for something cheaper like the Netgear Stora, but chances are you'll miss some of the feature of the synology eventually.

Thanks guys

I've updated to the latest firmware but after much research I think it might be various services keeping it awake. I've kind of made my mind up to either RMA or sell it on as I think it's more than I need and I really wanted the ease of WOL and putting it sleep.

Do you mean sleep or do you mean to have it turn off completely and truly use WOL? If it's the latter it cannot be done on your model as it does not support it.

If it is not sleeping then perhaps your disk is not on the supported list. Also, which services are you running? I might be able to help you with which services might be keeping it awake.

In all honesty, If you've any doubts about the product and it's user interface you probably don't deserve it :p My synology amazes me everyday with how blooming brilliant it is in every way. And it is indeed very easy to setup and use. Let me know if you need any pointers. DON'T GIVE UP ON IT!

Hhhmm, watching this with interest as I am toying with grabbing one of these !
Currently, I have a Freecom FSG3 WLAN for NAS duties, but it is starting to get flaky :(

From reading up so far, I thought one could schedule power up/power down ? That is possibly an alternative to the WOL solution, if you tend to use within certain timeframe generally ?

YOU DON'T NEED TO USE SCHEDULED POWER OR WOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

They barely use any power anyway and it will go into hibernate after a while. It's a non issue.

BUY A SYNOLOGY EVERYONE, SEE IF YOU CAN FIND A BAD REVIEW OF ONE.

edit: sorry, I just love them.

I love my synology box, Just leave it on tho it shuts the HDD down after a little while and the power useage is like 2w or somthing lol,

I map my network drive to my pc's i. \\192.168.1.10\music is the path for the map. if you i.p is .10

I find my synology very very easy to use and have even setup my own www. that goes to it when im at work etc.

When I first got mine (DS411) I didn't understand a lot of things but now I love it. I would really consider keeping it. They really are a great bit of kit. I have mine shut down monday-friday in the day as I'm at work but it runs from 4pm-7am in the week and on all weekend. As I get unlimited off peak downloads it goes about getting them while everyone's sleeping all shedualed of course.

Why have it power down and then WOL? Waking takes ages as all the services get started etc. you'd only want to do this if you used it like once a month or something.

look in control panel > power > HDD hibernation and also power schedule .

accessing from the internet..
have you got a static IP? probably not, so register and setup a host at no-ip.com and enter the info into the NAS at control panel > DDNS
then set your router to forward the ports to the NAS for the services that you want to use. 5000 is for DSM (definitely do this one) 7000 for File station etc etc

then you can log in with by typing what you registered at no-ip into address bar of your remote browser eg: pumaz.no-ip.org:5000
