Does anyone know, is the Synology DS414 able to take and use the "full" capacity of 6tb WD red drives? It indicates so on the website but some reviews say 4tb is the limit.

Thanks!

I have had a quick look here

https://www.synology.com/en-uk/products/DS414#spec

from the site posted above

Maximum Internal Raw Capacity 24 TB (6 TB HDD X 4) (Capacity may vary by RAID types) (See All Supported HDD)

hope this helps, the limit may be down to what HDD's they are trying as there is only certain ones you can use

It will use 6TB fine, I have a 6TB Red in my DS414.

When it came out, the largest drive at the time was 4TB. They've since revised their own site, but reviewers are less likely to update old reviews :)

Thank you both - ED209 I thought I checked that but didnt see an explicit reference to 6gb - and it said 16gb total, maybe thats the single volume size or something. Or maybe I'm seeing a cached page on google.

bledd - thanks for that is epecially reassuring to see it done in practice - I have a 4gb drive on hand to put in but may well get some 6gb ones in the future.

You can put in 4x 6TB drives.

This would give you 18GB usable space in SHR (Synology Hybrid RAID)

Yup.

The same as RAID5

Have a play with this.

https://www.synology.com/en-us/support/RAID_calculator

If you used 2x6TB drives in SHR, you'd get 6TB space (one drive protection, same as RAID1).

SHR adjusts it's mode on the fly as you add drives to it.

Right now mine has a single 6TB drive (no protection), if I added another, it would turn itself into a RAID1. Very handy feature.

-I keep manual backups of my data for now, didn't want to take the financial hit of 3x6tb drives

Well thats handy, I was worried about stumping for 4x6tb.

So I can buy 1 6tb drive today for 6tb unprotected

then add a 2nd still 6tb but raid 1
then add a 3rd for 12tb
Then add a 4th for 18tb

And it will just reconfigure itself?

Yup.

As you add them, it will ask you what you want it to do with the new disc. As long as it's the same size, it will let you do as you've suggested (that's what I plan to do with mine too)

Stick to WD Red. It will take while (I'd assume 6-12 hours) to move the files around the new disks as they are added. An overnight job :).

Not all of them support hot-swap (putting in disks when it's already on), but the 414 does.

Skip to about 3 minutes in..

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd1icxBiaNU

This is an older verison of Synology, but it's a very similar process :)

Oh thats just what I'm looking for, The NAS is on its way. I'm gonna get a 6tb drive and I'll have an upgrade path to 18tb.

bledd do you have the dual lan connection set up? Does the dual ports thing make it faster? I plan to use a gigabit 8port switch as I already have 5 other things that really need wired connections. But thats an unmanaged switch, so is that OK? I could put it directly in the Modem/Router if not.

To utilise both, you'll need a managed switch, then create a trunk (aka link aggregation), so the 2x ports appear as one..

I went down that route, but tbh, it was a silly expense for a home user. I'd just stick to the one port.

Might this be possible on the Modem? I recently got sent the Talk Talk Huawei HG635 FTTC modem, (which hasnt disapointed so far). I havnt really played with the config much yet.

Actually as once it gets to the switch its only going to go down one cable to the modem and thence another single cable to the device (or WiFi) then presumably its a waste of time anyway?
