Synology DSM 6 released

Just updated my 214se. Seems decent, although it installed by default a bunch of add-ons I don't need so had to remove them.

They've separated many previously embedded programs into their own packages so it's easier to patch them without needing to update the whole os.

to my shame, i have literally NEVER updated the dsm on my 8 bay synoloogy. It's probably about 4 years old now..

i completely under-use it. I mean, it holds all my media and photos etc but i never use any of the features apart from simple sharing of files on my network. I guess i'm missing out big time right?

Definitely, I use mine as a media server, backup server, torrent downloader etc, and even then I'm barely scraping the surface of what it can do.

Also nice to see they've updated the mobile interface for DSM now, looks far more modern and has some new features.

You should, there have been some pretty serious security issues (as with any OS) over the years.

Ive just "upgraded" My Unraid "baremetal" server to DSM 5.2 (I'm sure 6.0 wont come out for a while yet unfortunately)

7*3TB storage drives + 2 *parity in RAID 6 all running smoothly so far even though its registering an i5 as an i3 (probably because there are no i5 Synology devices hahaha)

Well I was going to post on the Synology forums but they are being absolutely hammered!!! :D

Not a great indication of the new DSM update when the official forums are being slowed to a crawl through every man and his dog posting a plethora of problems!

For me it's gone relatively smoothly in comparison but the CPU use on my DS213 is stuck at 99%!?!?!

It also seems to have installed a bunch of carp that I really don't think I need such as:

  • Hyper Backup
  • Hyper Backup Vault
  • PH 5.6
  • Storage Analyser
  • Text Editor

Do I actually need any of these? and is anyone else having the same CPU usage problem??

Updated my DS213Jair
CPU On large transfer is 50% idle is 0%

mine updated to this and stopped couchpotato, sonarr and transmission from working.

ive had to downgrade to 5.2 to get everything back to normal and turn off the auto update.

took me most of the weekend to sort it out as i have nil knowledge of linux.

This is on DS215+, different model users report no problems but i will give this a few months before i update, if i ever do. I had no issues before the update.
