I'll be setting my Synology NAS up this weekend and would just like to know whether it's best to use RAID 0 or JBOD for my setup.

It's only a 2 bay NAS and I'll have 2 x 2TB HDDs installed. I'm not interested in parity etc cos I back up once a week so if a drive goes down I can easily replace the data. From a speed point of view I think I'll be better off running RAID 0.

I wouldnt have the cojones to run RAID0 without something else underneath, even at home. Its faster sure, but risky.

I think I'd just go with JBOD since its just two disks. If a drive fails, you have half the amount to restore or recover.

I would run the drives singulary or as JBOD as a decent single drive will just about saturate a 1Gb connection anyway.

Why don't you just experiment and try both?

just commit a small amount of data and few simple shares etc to each setup and see which suits you best?

The Syn DMS does not take that long to install

:) :)

EDIT

with HDD prices being so high it's a lot of money to commit and I suspect that this may be influcing your choices with regards to parity... but perhaps you should reconsider RAID1 when prices fall again :)
