Synology NAS transfer problems - anyone have the same?

Hi guys

I hope this is the correct sub-forum!

I've got a Synology DS410 setup in RAID 10 providing 4TB of storage with x4 2TB disks.

Since I've had it I've just been dumping stuff onto it and I've got some time this weekend to actually organise, edit, delete and properly archive the stuff I want.

The problem is it's incredibly slow, it is transferring data to the main PC at 7MB/s on a gigabit connection! :(

So I thought, no problem, I have less than 2TB of data on there I'll back it up to one big 2TB drive. I connected it via eSATA and left it overnight, I come back 10 hours later to find it only around 1/4 done and taking 65 seconds to transfer around 1GB of data...it's just stupidly slow.

I have the latest update for it, I thought it was going slowly so installed the latest update last night...now if anything it's even slower!

Looking on the Synology forums there seems to be other people with issues and no solutions so I'm wondering if you knowledgeable people have had any dealings with it or managed to sort it out?

Thanks. :)

I had some problems transferring stuff around too, but turned out to be Windows 7. After a bit of tweaking I've greatly increased the transfer speed. :) If you google "Windows 7 + Slow Transfer" you should get some info.

Thanks for the reply, I did wonder if it was Windows but I don't think it can be in this case.

I left it transferring overnight, came back to it this morning and it had logged out of the web interface so it was just doing it's thing independently and it was still stupidly slow as it hadn't transferred much.

Remember the data is going from the NAS via the eSATA cable onto the ext hdd, as far as I'm aware after it's been given the instruction Windows isn't involved.

I have the DS409 and using the web interface to transfer from pc to nas is a lot slower than using windows explorer. Using the web interface i get around 20 megabytes per second, but using windows explorer (windows 7) i get 40 megabytes per second. It also depends on the file size, loads of small files is much slower than large files.

Also, I have found enabling jumbo frames has quite a big impact on transfer speed.

Thanks for the post Andy.

It's been a bit of a nightmare today, but it's interesting to hear about your speed differences, I always use Explorer to transfer, when I used the web interface last night it was just to set a backup going to see if that helped.

Well today I went back to the basics of troubleshooting...I changed the network switch over for another one I had and updated all the motherboard drivers I could find including of course the ethernet.

Currently it's transferring at a steady 65MB/s and it has been going up to 70-80MB/s earlier this evening - it's currently transferring big video files which could account for the slight speed drop.
