Hey all,

I just purchased a synology nas box for home use. Just copied over a ton of video, music and pictured for streaming onto different computers and tablets

However as a noob I am thinking how will be the best way to keep those folders up to date. As in synced with my local main PC. I am always adding new music and pictures

Any tips or advise would be great

Why do you need to keep them sync'd?

Use the NAS as a central storage location rather than as a copy of what you're storing on your PC. You then just need a backup routine for anything that actually matters.

Just create a series of networked locations and move the default location on Windows to those networked drives. Been ok for me so far but make sure you disable Windows Sync.

I use Acronis True Image which allows you to at the click of a button sync your folders on your PC with the folders on your NAS. I think that's what your asking.

I am currently using an old IcyBox 1 drive NAS which I hope to be upgrading soon. Which Synology NAS did you go for if you don't mind me asking?

Slight digression, could I use that to create an image of my PC which could be used to restore at a later date if needed?

I'm not aware of that. Could I use it to create a backup on my NAS?

I think you are asking if Windows can make an image of your OS and then back it up onto a NAS. If that is your question then yes it can.

Windows 8, go to control panel and type 'file history' in the search box. Click on File History and it will do a quick search. Once that is done click on 'System Image Backup' in bottom left of the window. Then the rest is straight forward.

Well at present I need to go into the synology web interface and drag files in.

I do want to keep my main PC as the master and have the nas for the 9 other devices in the house.

You'd be better off using network shares rather than the DSM's web-based file manager, as the latter is fairly slow. And as said, if you want to image your PC then Acronis, CloneZilla or Window's built-in image feature will allow you to do that; otherwise, if you want to sync directories to your NAS/network shares then i'd recommend SyncBackup or Microsoft's (free) Synctoy (a little basic but it works).

This would be the better way to do it! I've setup various mapped drivers which point to the NAS and then changed the location of the Windows Explorer folders like My Documents, Downloads, Music, Videos etc... to point to the mapped drives!

Thanks for the replies guys. I think I will have to change how I do things. The main reason is to have all the media viewable on the NAS which think I think I have.

I guess I could use robocopy to write to the video / music / pictures folders on the NAS from my main pc if I want to to

Anyone know what the cmd is to skip a file if that file exists ? I have mine current robo set to mirror which will overwrite the nas as the nas downloads sub's and album art.

On looking at YouTube it would seem by syncing cloud storage I can do what I want to do for my music / video and pics folders. I will have a play tomorrow

Just use something like Bvckup (you can use the beta version for free) to sync folders on your PC to folders on the NAS. It's what I use for my Music etc that I like to have accessible remotely.

Create shared folders on the NAS.

I connect to mine like this..

\\nas\music
\\nas\videos
\\nas\documents

etc

As Bledd said, then I run a scheduled robocopy script to sync between my main PC and the NAS. All other devices use the NAS as the default media location (including the TV over DLNA), and the main PC uses it's local copy.

Been using a Synology Diskatation DS415+ 4 Bay NAS.

Wish I had bought one before, it's a great bit of kit with excellent software and very good speeds as well (112mb/sec).

Bit expensive, when you have to add the drives as well it starts to mount up (got a pair of 4TB WD reds in raid1).

Hopefully will serve me for many years to come.
