Synthology vs HTPC?

Some would argue that proper software raid is actually a better choice than a non-server grade hardware setup.

I have been running 3x 2TB drives in the original HP Microserver, Linux softraid 5 without any issues.

If I were to rebuild, I'd either go ZFS or BTRFS which have features to better deal with partial failures of a drive.

If you're less confident there are a bunch of free NAS options that install on generic x86 hardware.
