Hi guys,

Looking to build a new system in the coming month or so and having done a fair bit of research I have the following spec mapped out. Would appreciate any advice on this please. Many thanks. HD storage may seem a bit low here but I have 2 existing SATA drives I will use in addition.

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 (I do a bit of video work so extra cache over the E6300 will be useful)
  • ASUS P5W64 WS Professional i975X (I highly doubt I will have SLI so this mbd seems best option, and I'd like to overclock)
  • Zalman CNPS9700-LED Super Aero Flower Cooler (Seems like it will keep the CPU nice and cool, but is there anything better? I want quiet)
  • 700w Seasonic M12-700 SLi Modular PSU (Overkill? Would the 600w version of this PSU be enough?)
  • CellShock 2Gb CellShock DDR2 PC2-6400 800MHz (4-4-4-12) (RAM confuses me, but this seems good stuff by all accounts I've read)
  • Akasa Mirage-62 Midi Tower Case (I want a door and this seems a great all round case)
  • 74 Gb Western Digital WD740ADFD Raptor, SATA150, 10000 rpm
  • 36 Gb Western Digital WD360ADFD Raptor, SATA150, 10000 rpm
  • 8800GTX (Not sure what brand but i'll just get cheapest when I buy)
:)

Welcome to the forums, it all looks good, a 700w PSU is probably overkill, you could go with the Corsair 620w which is based on the Seasonic design but is supposed to be higher quality and cheaper. The CPU cooler is good but a Tuniq Tower is more effective I believe and at least as quiet. You could get Geil PC6400 instead of the Cellshock Ram, it is cheaper but it appears to have specifications that are as good (aside from the 8 layer PCB thing) although I also know little about Ram.

Thanks for that. I had not even considered the Corsair PSU, but that does seem a good option, and will save me £50 as well!

I've heard good things about the Tuniq so that could be an option. It's cheaper and if it's more effective and just as quiet then I guess it's a no brainer! I think it was just the prettiness of the Zalman that got me. Presumably you still need Arcitc Silver or some other stuff to do between the CPU and cooler? Not sure what the best stuff is these days?

I noticed the comparable Geil RAM is quite a bit cheaper. Not sure if that 8 PCB layer thing actually makes a difference to anything. Anyone else know?
