Hi folks ,

After much umming and ahhing around my return to the PC brigade and what hardware to get me started Im coming to the conclusion that I would rather invest slightly more money in higher end system etc. I dont require a Monitor, keyboard mouse or headphones but will require Win7 64bit.

So I really would appreciate any help (again!) in deciding what would be ideal.

MOBO - G1 Sniper
CPU - 2600K Intel
GPU - GTX 580 or maybe 590 (is the 590 a worthwhile upgrade over the 580)

RAM- ?
PSU - ?

Case - ? Dont fancy a huge full size over intruding case if I can help it!
Fans - ?

DVD Drive - ?
SSD - Small size solely to take advantage of the Intel SRT tech if i throw in a small HDD but I'll only be hammering BF3 so dont need a massive HDD as I have a Mac for my main everyday computing. This is purely a BF3 gaming rig.

Maybe a budget of 1350-1500 max. although Im not looking for the top end of absolute everything although its hard saying that given the MoBo and GPU fit that description!

Many thanks!

1. GTX590 is and isn't worth the upgrade. Firstly, it's amazingly powerful and will last for years, secondly, it's very expensive and will need a MASSIVE amount of power!

PSU: Cooler Master Silent Pro Modular 1000W: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-192-CM&groupid=701&catid=123&subcat=1103

Memory: Corsair Dominator GT 2 x 2GB: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-305-CS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1387 (may want to make it 8gb)

Case: Easy Decision: Corsair Graphite 600T WHITE!: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-043-CS&groupid=701&catid=7&subcat=1489

Fans: The case comes with plenty of fans, but if you want to add some nice quiet ones that shift plenty of air: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-030-SY&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

SSD: Crucial M4 64GB: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-008-CR&groupid=1657&catid=2101&subcat=

DVD: Asus 24x dvd rw: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CD-056-AS&groupid=701&catid=10&subcat=951

These should give you what you want.

don't bother with a 590 or even a 580, get to 460's in SLI and its still more powerful than a 580 but only £200 and you only need a 700/800 watt psu which will cost less, and it means when something new comes out sell it!

Cinders thanks for taking the time to reply and source the components for us.

I have just been looking at the Corsair 650d is it size comparable to the white 600T? I may just end up going for the 580 GTX over the 590. It would be nice to have a 590 but the 580 is more than capable at running BF3 I would imagine!

More than likely go for 8Gb RAM just to be on the safe side.

Thanks again!

Stu

Executor Kevin,

Just seen your post! Now that is good advice! 2 460's in place of a single 580 a better option? Glad I posted for help on here, the price of the build is getting less by the hour!

Just had a look at the two cases 600T (white) and 650D. the 600T is certainly more pleasing on the eye!

Thanks for the input gents!

YOUR BASKET

Total : £274.79 (includes shipping : £9.00).

grahics card is on offer, so you'll have to make two separate purchases to get two of them. this should come to ~£1425, which is slap bang in the middle of your budget

and my reasoning:
GTX 590 isnt worth it. the GTX 590 is two GTX 580's on a single card, but they have been turned down a huge amount so that they ca be cooled properly and so they dont take too much power. the problem is it didnt work very well, and the card still overheats massively and has the loudest cooler in the universe. if you really want high end, go for two 570's, or two 580's. both of these will be better options than the 590.

if your only gaming on this PC then the i5 2500k is the way to go. the only difference between the i5 and i7 is the i7 can do hyperthreading, which most games cant take advantage of. BF3 can take advantage of it, but the £75 would be better spent elsewhere
i5 2500k vs i7 2600k: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=287

the G1 sniper motherboard is ridiculously overpriced. the reason is because it comes with stuff that you really dont need, including an expensive soundcard and an expensive network card. you might find a teeny tiny advantage using these, but it would be best to go for the asrock Z68 extreme 4 gen3, as this is the equivalent motherboard minus the stuff you dont want.

the case is generally down to personal preference when you get into the higher end. the common ones to recommend would be the silverstone raven (any one), coolermaster HAF X, corsair 650D and corsair 600T. the silverstone being the best for air cooling (but hopeless if you plan to go down the watercooling route) , and the corsair 650D being a good halfway house between air and water cooling

i really wouldnt do that

pros of 2x 460 over 1x 580:
slightly better average framerate than a single 580

cons of 2x 460 over 1x 580:
lower VRAM
higher power consumption
no upgrade path
plenty of microstuttering

the OP has enough of a budget for two 570's, which will blow a single 580 out of the water. yes there wont be an upgrade path, but you wont need one anywhere near as much. it should also reduce microstuttering, which is generally present when you are using crossfire or SLI on lower end cards

*edit*
while i remember, if you have your heart set on the gigabyte motherboard then i will happily redo my spec to squeeze it in, but i really wouldnt recommend it
also, if you go for the silverstone raven + antec khuler then you will need to ignore what it says in the instructions and mount the radiator as an outlet on the roof of the case

Reaper,

Been going through your spec for the new system. Seems I may go with your recommendation bar the case. Not keen on the Silverstone Raven. Would a Bit fenix Shinobi or Corsair 600T white be a good alternative?
Will more than likely go for the GTX 570 and maybe drop the SLI. As long as this system can run BF3 sweetly then Ill be a happy chappy. Great realisation reference the MoBo though. I wont be needing the high end audio and to be honest i really dont want the highest end of everything! As I say if it runs BF3 sweet and BF2 then it'll be bliss!

Thanks again for taking the time to giving us an idea on what to purchase.

a 570 and a 600T would be great.
as i say, the high end cases are more down to personal preference than performance. personally i love the looks of the raven more than anything, and think the 600T looks like an antec 100 thats parked in a shell, but you could think the complete opposite

Cheers Reaper,

As you say, the choice of case comes down to personal pref. Im not one for the aggressive looking cases so something with a lower profile is for me. Fractal design seem to do nice cases too. So many cases too much choice springs to mind!

Cheers
