Hi,

im looking for your advice. I have a case and 550w psu. Spinning HD ok, but would like a SSD for the OS and primary game if possible. I have a GTX680 for graphics.

Im looking for a bundle that will do me for a couple of years. I want to play Minecraft, Planetside 2, Elder Scrolls, etc, but I dont need to max it out, graphics card was a welcome gift.

I was thinking AMD piledriver or Intel I5 with 8Gb of mem, not sure what fits my profile best.

Ill need a windows OS and dont really want to spend more that £400 all in.

What are your thoughts?

Cheers

Hi Danny

mostly, i dont need the extra HDD, and Im not sure what fits best with GTX, amd or intel, or doesnt it matter? So I am looking for a recommendation on

Mobo, Cpu & Cooler
8GB Ram,
Windows (8.1 I'm assuming)?
SSD if theres any money left.

Thanks
G

Can't fault RJC's spec.

Here's an alternative way of going about it, though, if the idea of an SSD still appeals.

To free up money for an SSD, you could use Windows 8 free for 3 months while you save up to purchase it.

The aftermarket cooler is also something you could sacrifice for now, to free up some money, and use the stock cooler until you decide you want to overclock. That CPU is going to give you good performance anyway, at stock clock.

So if you do this, you could end up with a quality 250GB SSD right now:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Samsung 250GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE250BW) £119.99
1 x Asus Z87-K Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £79.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan GOLD 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLYD38G2133HC11ADC01) £53.99
Total : £431.56 (includes shipping : £8.00).

If you'd like to overclock straightaway, then a 120GB SSD + aftermarket cooler (make sure it fits in your case):

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i5-4670K 3.40GHz (Haswell) Socket LGA1150 Processor - Retail £167.99
1 x Asus Z87-K Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £79.99
1 x Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £65.99
1 x TeamGroup Vulcan GOLD 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17100C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (TLYD38G2133HC11ADC01) £53.99
1 x Alpenföhn Matterhorn Pure Edition CPU Cooler £29.99
Total : £407.54 (includes shipping : £8.00).

**B Grade** Asus Z87 MAXIMUS VI HERO Intel Z87 (Socket 1150) DDR3 ATX (MB-563-AS) £89.99
Microsoft Windows 8.1 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00614) £74.99
Samsung 120GB SSD 840 EVO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7TE120BW) £67.99
Kingston HyperX Beast 8GB (2x4GB) PC3-19200C11 2400MHz Dual Channel Kit (KHX24C11T3K2/8X) £45.95
Raijintek Aidos Direct Contact CPU Cooler £14.99

Sub Total : £374.91

Any thoughts/issues?

You'll want a beefier cooler if you'll be overclocking to any great extent, but other than that it looks fine.

For £450 it looks good, apart from the cooler as Fulax mentioned. The gains over the stock cooler will be minimal imo, so getting the "Retail" version with stock cooler and 3 years warranty instead of 1, is what I'd do instead, unless I were forking out a bit more for a better cooler.

That's a massive discount on the motherboard so you could check with OcUK regarding what's missing (usually CD's/SATA cables etc) or what's the minor damage, if any, on it. If not a problem it's a gem of a deal. Good spot. :)

any recommendation on the cooler? I should overclock, its probably worth spending a little more to get the max bang for the buck.

Do the coolers come with a pad of thermal paste or do i need to buy thermal paste?
Cheers

What case do you have and how much you looking to spend on the cooler.

Most coolers come with either paste pre-applied or a tube/sachet.

Hi,
Not sure on the case, its an antec, plenty of space with a neat modular design, should be big enough its got 160mm from the existing motherboard to the edge of the case
There are fans on the back and top.

Cheers
