Hi guys,

I seem to do this every year or so, so apologies for being indecisive. My potential build last year was put on hold by unforseen circumstances which saw me traveling back home a couple of times.

I had a build all lined up with a shop in Tokyo, but now they tell me they're too busy and won't be taking any new build orders until the Spring, so basically now I want to build it myself.

Like everyone when they start out, I am terrified of making a mistake which is going to cost me a lot of money. I have watched numerous guides and everything seems like it should be easy, but doubts still remain.

I have gone for the below in terms of components as I am no longer semi-restricted by the shop I was buying from. I appreciate there is a build guide stickied on the forum, that I will be using, but if anyone can take a look at the below and see a) any potential compatibility issues or anything I should be wary of before pulling the trigger and launching in to the build and b) any other parts you would recommend, be them fans etc to complete the build.

> Ryzen 3700x
> MSI B450 Tomahawk Max
> Be Quiet Dark Rock Slim
> Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4-3600
> Corsair RM650x
> Gigabyte RTX2070 Super Gaming OC 3X
> Samsung 970 Evo 500GB NVMe
> Crucial MX500 1TB SSD
> Define R6 Black Tower

Do your best guys, convince me that I can do this!

Consider a X570 motherboard, especially if you can envisage a PCIEv4 NVME drive down the line. See also fan header issue below.

Stretch for the Dark Rock Pro.

Very nice. Are you going to need any extra fans? If so does your motherboard support them all? If not you'll need a fan hub.

I was weighing up an X570 board. This means I can upgrade to Ryzen 4xxx if I wanted to down the line? Which board would you recommend?

Will take a look at the different cooler.

The R6 comes with 2 fans (1 intake and 1 exhaust). Would you recommend maybe throwing another intake in the front? Or an exhaust fan on top? I read that the case performs pretty well on just the two, but I’m open to more.

EDIT: Sorry looks like R6 comes with two intake and one exhaust fans as standard.

Have swapped out RM650x for the 2019 RM650, as if I was to go for a x570 board (TUF Gaming Plus perhaps?) I believe the motherboard requires an additional 4 pin power connector, which the former PSU does not have.

That's not certain.

Installing fans is easiest right at the start, and will help you should you decide to overclock. It will also - perhaps counterintuitively - help keep the noise down as you will get the same airflow and thus cooling effect for a lower fan RPM.

If I’m likely not going to be over clocking is it worth the extra for a X570 board? I’m now torn between maybe getting a Ryzen 3600, as not much difference gaming at 1440p. Please tell me to just go for the 3700x. :o

Also for RAM is it worth going 3200 C16 or 3600 C19. Maybe 3600 C18 is the sweet spot?

I’ve been faffing around with parts for so long now, it’s becoming somewhat torture!

Looks great. X570 not worth it unless you know you need it. 3200 C14 / 3600 C16 is what to aim for, if possible, or the next best thing.

Yeah I think I may still go with the B450 Tomahawk Max as I don't think X570 is worth it for me.

For the RAM I'll take another look. A lot of them list compatible with X570 - are these still going to be fine on B450?

Appreciate all the help so far guys. This is my first time building and don't want any compatibility issues before I've even started.

EDIT: It seems I can find 32GB of 3200-C16 memory for the same price as most 3600C16/18. I've read articles about speeds vs latency, but I think once you go over 3000 the difference is minimal? G.Skill SniperX is what I'm looking at.

Similar to what I went for about 3 months back: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/threads/gaming-and-video-encoding-pc-around-1000-or-so.18866165/ Tomahawk max goes well with the 3700x. And yes, like you I was worried about making a mistake during the build. It's the first pc i've built and so far, so good :) Take it slowly and you'll be fine. Once you get past That satisfaction when it boots into bios for the first time :)

I found this guide very useful for a ryzen build: https://forums.overclockers.co.uk/posts/31360755

ps, as for extra fans, if you need them, these are good: https://www.overclockers.co.uk/arctic-cooling-p14-pwm-pst-black-fan-140mm-fg-04k-ar.html You can also daisy chain 2 of those into 1 fan header on the motherboard. One other thing, before installing the fans, check to see what screws come with the case. These fans come with screws (short ones). But, if there are fan screws included with the case, those may be more appropriate, especially when installing front fans.

Thanks for the advice and good to hear your PC build went ok, espeically as you do have very similar parts to mine. I am going to go with the stock fans for now and see how I go as I don't want to overcomplicate things.

So after having nearly all the parts for 3 days, the CPU cooler finally arrived today.

Built everything tonight and plugged it all in. First ever build so was almost shaking as I pushed the power button. Nearly **** myself when nothing happened, but after a second the power light came on and viola!

Windows and drivers all installed but time for bed now. The real fun can begin tomorrow night.

Apart from nearly losing the M.2 screw, dropping a GPU mounting screw in to the case and changing the cable layout a million times, it went pretty smoothly.

Big thanks to everyone here who has helped in this thread and many others. I was still nervous and spending three days watching guides and reading what could go wrong while I waited on the last part definitely didn’t help.

If anyone has any less known tips about setting a new PC let me know. Otherwise thanks again and happy new year to all.

Remember to install the chipset drivers. Better if you install that particular one directly from AMD. https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/amd-socket-am4/b450 https://drivers.amd.com/drivers/amd_chipset_software_1.11.22.454.zip

The chipset driver will give you two new power plans in Windows power plan options (Ryzen Balanced and Ryzen High Performance). Ryzen Balanced seems to be the favoured one just now in terms of no negative effects.

And it can be the case that the motherboard sets a pretty steep auto profile for the fans when you enable XMP (for the RAM) or enable PBO. So leave the fan tuning for after you enable those. Or it'll keep messing it up.

Happy new year.

I did install the motherboard chipset dirver from MSI. Should I go with the one from AMD one instead?
