Just wondering if anyone has any ideas. My rig was working fine last night, powered it off to celebrate the new year coming in.

Got up this morning to check emails etc and it is as dead as a dodo.

Nothing is powering up, not even the fans. The motherboard LED is on so there is power to the motherboard. ATM i'm stumped to as what could be wrong.

Specs are as follows off top of my head...
Asus a8n32
opteron 170
gskill 2 gig memory

many thanks

PSU ?

Same thing happened to me when my graphics card broke, try taking out your graphics card. If that's not it, try taking out each thing that's unnecesarry then turning it on, like try a stick of memory, then try a pci card if you have any, etc.

does your mobo have an led on it to show power. If nothing is turning on, probably psu. Although I have had the switch die before.

Depends what spares and tools you have.

If you have a volt meter check psu is supplying power to mobo or check the led is on.

If it's not change the psu lead if you have a spare one or try a new fuse. If that doesn't work new psu time.

If the psu appears fine, try putting the reset switch as the main switchs see if that works.

Othere than that disconnect hdd, gfx, cd's ect and try and get some life out of a fan.

A little off topic here but, remember all the chaos before the millenium, every computer was apparently going to crash when the year digits reached 200 or 00.

Apart from that, I would try another PSU and try your PSU in another system if you can.

Don't forget to check everything between the computer and plug socket are working too (including the socket itself). Have seen people replace numerous parts in their computer before realising the problem was with a faulty kettle lead or gang-plug :o

Don't want to infer that you wouldn't think of this, but best to make sure something that will only cost a couple of quid to fix isn't the cause first imo :)

edit: I missed that AcidHell alluded to this :o

I am also having the same problem! I left my computer last night and went to a mates place - got back this morning and it turned itself off overnight and now won't turn on.

The motherboard light is still on so i' guessing it's not the psu, but might be mistaken.

I have a P4C800-E deluxe, P4 3Ghz, 1gig ram. And a silentmaxx 430W PSU. I'm haven't overclocked anything.

Strange...almost exactly the same thing happened to me this morning except mine seemed to power up for one second before immediately stopping. The only way I could get it to do anything was to switch off the power for a minute...if I simply tried pressing the power on button without doing this I'd get nothing after the initial one second power up.

That suggested to me a power capacitor problem or some such. I cleaned around the area where they live and removed all the fluff around the capacitors and it started working again. I can only guess I had a short or there's a dry joint somewhere.

Didn't have a storm did you around those parts last night did you... could have been a surge? :S

There are 5 houses across from me with tiles off thier roofs.

Seemed a tad windy last night.

Similar thing happened to me but a few days ago. Think I have isolated mine to the graphics card but I was wanting to upgrade to a dual core pc anyway and was debating whether to drop an opteron in my aging 939 agp board or upgrade the whole hog - this made the decision easy :D

Yeah i'm not too bothered as i am upgrading this week too, but i did want to give this pc to my sister so if i can get it going again it'll make her happy :)

Took everything out and just had mobo, cpu and ram connected still dead, swapped psu same thing, but the stuff i took out into another rig and they work.

So narrowing down seems like either mobo or cpu or most prob both are dead.

Ah well lesson learned get a surge protector next time.

Yeah, I just spoke to a mate whose PC died last night too.

Can we start the witch hunt now? :) Seems odd that a lot of people are starting the new year with dead rigs :(

I was thinking the same thing! Must have been a few power surges for one reason or another
