General advice required on this (and some reassurance that I’m thinking along the right lines here)

I have Q6600 (running at stock – I know, I’m a lazy git), 4GB RAM, 4850 graphics, Windows 7. I have been getting a message that the ‘System disk is not found, please insert Boot disk and press enter’. I checked the cable to the HD and the mobo and the system booted, but froze after about 2 minutes. I checked the cable etc again, got the System disk message again. I disconnected and reconnected the HD and the mobo and the system booted and ran without problems for the rest of the day. This pattern has repeated itself over the past week. I replaced the SATA cable and it was stable for 2 days, but has kicked off again this morning. My thoughts are to replace the HD next. Does that sound logical? Should it be getting as far as booting to Windows if its a HD error? It’s the HD or the mobo and the HD is the cheapest first option.

As a follow up – I have the Win 7 upgrade disk (from the student offer). My copy of Vista is long gone (although I still have the serial number) on the side of the case). I’m assuming I can install from scratch with the upgrade disk?

Cheers

Which mobo board do you have running on it? i have a Q6600 running at stock and my raptor did just about the same as yours but having clicking sounds when booting, but when it did boot it worked fine in windows. Any how i just replaced it and its been working fine since. I would be ready now to replace that HD of yours.
