System doesn't POST after upgrade

Been at least 4 years since I build anything so I could be doing something horribly wrong but can't for the life of me get the system going after the upgrade. Old specs are as follows:

Athlon II X2 245
4GB DDR2 RAM
M61PME-S2P
GTS 250
80GB SATA Drive
Corsair 400W PSU
DVD-RW Drive

This has been upgraded to:

G3258
8GB (4GBx2) XMS3 Corsair 1333Mhz DDR3 RAM (only second hand components from the upgrade bits)
MSI B85M P33
Sandisk 128GB SSD
From above I'm re-using the GPU, PSU and the DVD-RW drive and everything went into a new case as well

Put everything together, went to start it and it all spins up but nothing showing up on the screen and also noticed that all the system fans are spinning on their maximum setting. Cleared CMOS, went for a bare boot with all drives and extra fans disconnected, this time the CPU fans spins to maximum and after a few seconds goes to a quiet mode but still nothing showing up on the monitor.

Thinking it could be a PSU issue (despite Pentium being less thirsty than the Athlon) I disconnect the GPU and try to use onboard VGA port to same effect. Moving onto RAM I try one module at a time in different ports and same again. Plug the PSU back into the old system and everything boots hunky dory first time.

I double checked all the PSU connections, I screwed risers into the new case so can't be a shorting issue so frankly quite stumped now apart from going by the process of elimination but old parts are not compatible with new and I only own a laptop so stuck between this being a possible motherboard (brand new), CPU (brand new) or RAM issue (bought on MM here so trust it).

Any help or ideas would be very much appreciated!

EDIT: Nothing faulty but motherboard indeed needed a BIOS update

That's a very old original system. Is the motherboard fully powered? Check the power socket by the CPU. Is it possible you've got the cable in the wrong way round?

Yeah old homework machine for the sister, now wants to play Minecraft and Source level games so due a refresh and I'll be sticking a 750ti in there some time in next few months.

Motherboard is pretty basic so don't see no little LCD displays or even LEDs on it but fans do spin up and both the 20pin and 4pin connectors are plugged in correctly.

Do you have another PSU you can try? I have in the back of my mind a memory that old PSUs aren't compatible with newer Intel chips.

Afraid not, all the components I have are listed above as I only have a laptop. At this point only way I can think of to isolate the problem is process of elimination which isn't possible as I have no spare machine or parts and could get expensive if I start buying them just for a test.

It could quite easily be a PSU issue. Are you saying you've got a 20-pin motherboard cable and a single 4-pin cpu lead?

The Haswell psu compatibility is to do with the low energy C6/C7 states though. This shouldn't affect it unless you use sleep/hibernate.

This might sound stupid, but the motherboard could have come with an outdated BIOS that doesn't support the G3258 out of the box. I've had this with an AMD board and fortunately was able to update the BIOS.

If it won't even get to the BIOS, then it may well need a different processor in order to do the update.

As you've got access to the MM, you might be able to get hold of a cheap Pentium G3220/other non Haswell-refresh Pentium. That will tell you if it's the CPU and could be cheaper than forking out on another PSU.

Actually my bad it's a 24pin and 4pin connectors so all good there.

Have considered compatibility since there's a V2 of the motherboard on sale now, website of course says G3258 is compatible but no mention if I need a BIOS update. Being a B85 board it's quite likely the culprit, I just hope I don't end up buying a second computer worth of parts as they are all around £30 each anyway heh
