On one of my older systems I've replaced an 80mm fan that connects directly onto the motherboard

Replaced with a 120mm fan but when the 120mm fan is in I get a message saying system fan has failed. If I plug in the 80mm fan this message doesn't come back on, if I take the fan out completely I get the same message

I know in some bios you have hardware monitor where you can disable certain things but this bios doesn't have hardware monitor

Any one have any ideas on what this could be

How many pins does the old and new fan have? its not that the new fan does not have a speed sensor? or the new fan spins too slowly for the motherboard to register.

I see what you mean :p, part of a HP system.

Did your old fan ever change in speed with system load?

You might need to change the fan to a higher speed version.

hmm, can you test the new fan in another system to ensure the speed sensor is working ok.

But I think the new fans turns slower so the system can't see the minimum speed.

Are you sure there is no way of disabling in the BIOS, it might be the most stupidest area :p :D
