When i go to the next step up which is 648 after 621 on the core, after about 40 seconds of ATi Tool testing the system will pretty much grind to a halt, I can still move the mouse about etc but everything seems dead. Does anyone know a reason for this and possibly a way to overcome it or have I just reached the max core?

I would say that is your max, same crap happens with me in tool, system hangs when i go to far, though i do eventually get a driver recovery message. In my experience the clocking software can give varying results depending which one you use, ntune would give me better clocks than riva but riva is best for using long term.

Ahh well fair enough just always wondered why it just grinds to a halt rather than the traditional BSOD or w.e

Using Expert Tool atm great bit of kit.

Try crysis benchmark and playing the demo for stability testing, ati tool is so buggy with these drivers and the 8800gt IMO.
I get artifacts on ati tool on 1758 shader clocks but if i uninstall ati tool i can go way over 1800 shader and pass crysis benchmark test i defo think atil tool isn't working right on some of these cards.I am rock solid 740/1853/200 but according to ati tool i shouldn't be solid at anything over 700/1853/950.

I'll always stress at least half an hour with ATi Tool before even entering a game with a new clock, to make sure there is absoloutely no artifacts/odd behaviour

Never had issues this way.
