So there I was happily listening to my music when all of a sudden the whole computer shut down. It then powered back on but with no display and no fans on the mobo/case/cpu and gfx card spinning up.

The hard drives spool up and the fan on the power supply spins. The lights on the mobo also light up but again no display.

Any suggestions before I start swapping parts?

Thanks

What are the System specs including PSU :)

Was the system overlocked? tried doing a CMOS reset.

System specs:

Biostar T-power x58 Intel mobo
Intel i7 920
OCZ reaper 6gb ram
Corsair hx 750w modular PSU
Gigabyte 570gtx gfx card

Setup is 5 years old with no overclocks applied.

CMOS reset hasn't worked

Get a lend of a psu and try it on your system or test your psu on another system if you can, if it works fine it's sounds like the motherboard. Hassle.

Unplug the power cable and press the power button to drain the power.

I would start with the RAM, to see if it that. I had a bad SATA power cable before that caused same issues as what you got.

I vote PSU - can you get hold of one to test? A cheapo unit will be fine to test as long as you know it works.

If same with another PSU then it's most likely mobo - I have never seen a CPU fail in my life, ever.
