Hi I have a problem with Windows 7 on start-up. It only happens when the computer’s been left overnight or off all day and I turn it back on. It gets to the Windows logo then stops - hanged wait for ages, the hard disk light flashes intermittently – eventually I give up and hard reset it.
It goes to windows repair --> do system restore --> restarts --> hangs --> hard reset it --> windows repair --> fails to repair --> turns itself off
Turn it back on runs like it’s been system restored and runs ok. Can reset it, shut it down and turn it back on no problems – until it’s left off again for a while then exact same problem
Ive updated mobo bios, drivers for chipset, graphics card all the other mobo drivers off the website. Ive taken everything out the mobo and plugged it back in. Windows Update done...

Here’s the system:
Windows 7 Professional from DVD
Asus P7P55D Deluxe – Bios version AMI 1408
QuadCore Intel Core i7 860, 2800 MHz (21 x 133)
4086 MB (DDR3-1333 DDR3 SDRAM)
Powercolour 5970 GPU – Driver version 8.723.0.0 – Haven’t updated bios on it - cant work out how to... Bios is 012.013.000.002.034996 from 10/23/09 10:49
I’ve tried every driver available on the AMD site
Intel X25-M 80GB SSD

When it’s running it runs well – but this is just killing me every time I start it up... I have a feeling it’s to do with the GPU driver – anyone able to tell me how I could work out what’s making it hang at setup?
Thanks, Will

Nope not using XMP profile as far as im aware unless it came pre-installed on motherboard

I ran boot logging - here are did not loads:

Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\vga.sys
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\NDProxy.SYS
Did not load driver \SystemRoot\System32\DRIVERS\srv.sys

found similar thread suggesting changing BIOS SATA Type from AHCI back to Native IDE
^^ anyone know if that's a good idea?

OK bit of progress... It hanged, I loaded safe mode, it opened windows. I uninstalled the graphics driver and rebooted and it opened windows normally (low res). I re-installed the driver and rebooted - hangs again.

Same with 5970 series drivers 10.3, 10.4 and 10.4a (haven't tried earlier ones)
- any ideas?
Doesn't seem temperature related - left it hanged for 10 mins then rebooted - didnt make a difference. Ill have to have a read about RAM timings but Im pretty sure the graphics driver seems to be the problem.

OK started getting crashes out of BFBC2 - couldn't find a solution so resorted to format & re-install.
Only things installed are Windows, Kaspersky (a legal version), 5970 driver version 10.4a and BFBC2.
Boot logging still shows failed vga.sys even when windows eventually successfully starts, and hanging from cold start is still happening. Am looking at how to check RAM timings now. Any new suggestions pls?

The registry editing didn't seem to work.
Ive changed my memory timings now - they were 9-9-9-24 instead of 8-8-8-24
Will post whether this sorts it out...

No difference - any other suggestions?
Why could it hang only from cold, and run ok after failing system repair?

First time ever it booted from cold today - only thing I can think of that I changed is installing latest driver from LG for the W2753V-PF monitor
