System hanging and crashing

Ever since i built my pc i would get the odd system hang when booted 3ds max and a few random crashes in games, once i changed to my crossfire set-up this has gotten ridiculous it will hang for the most basic of things even 100% lock up causing me to restart just for opening a folder, when it work's it works great but the crashes and lock up's are causing me to lose work.

I am using windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04 and both get the same problems.

Spec's.
AMD FX-8350
ASrock 970 Extreme 3 R2.0
Corsair Vengeance 16gb
Gigabyte R9 280x Windforce x2
124gb Samsung SSD
1TB HDD.
850W Akasa Cobra modular power supply.

How was are the 2 systems installed on the SSD?
Does this happen on both linux and windows?
Have you tried a reinstall of the OS?

One system (win 8) is on the ssd, ubuntu is on the other drive.
Both issues happen on both os's.
I havent reinstalled the os yet hoping to leave it as a last resort.
