Hi,

I've just constructed my new system which is:

E6600
Abit AB9 Pro
Geil 6400 2GB memory
Antec Truepower Trio 550W PSU

I haven't yet installed an OS on the hard disk as the system keeps on shutting down. When I enter BIOS and attempt to alter bootup sequence so I can install OS the system just powers down after 10-15 seconds!

There are no POST errors on the motherboard digital display.

Any help or guidance would be much appreciated!

Anyone any ideas?

Is this the first system you have built yourself ?
How did the thermal paste and CPU/heatsink fitting go ?
What PSU have you got ?

At a guess i would say you need to reapply paste and reseat the cooler/chip.
2nd guess would be poor connections or poorly fitted hardware. i.e. Ram or GFX card.
3rd Ignore this as your PSU is Sound but check how you have plugged hardware in.
4th guess is you have made a mistake in build.

Not my first time nope. CPU fitting went fine, applied a thin/even layer of paste. I have an Antec Truepower Trio 550W.

Hm, I will try reseating the componants and check power to all devices. Could it possibly be the Geil - I notice it is detecting it @ 533MHz and not 800MHz, could this be causing unstable problems?

the fast ram often defaults to a slower speed like 533 so that shouldnt be an issue. if you do get a few seconds in bios try and quickly get to the temperature section to see what it sais for your cpu.

Hi guys thanks for the posts. I have tried:

Reseating RAM into other slots
Replacing graphics card into PCI-e slot
Ensured all power to all devices

Still the same, I seem to have only 10-15 seconds before it powers down. I have tried looking for temps in BIOS can't find them - not enough time!!

Going to try and refit CPU and HSF see if that helps..

Anymore ideas?

Sounds like your PSU is faulty - check the 3.3v, 5v and 12v rails in the BIOS if you get the chance and see if any are out of 5% tollerance. It could also be a motherboard fault.

If it was a virus surely it wouldn't be shutting itself down whilst in the BIOS? as he describes would it - maybe if it was a nasty boot sector virus but I still doubt it.

Last thing, make sure your cpu isnt overheating as this can cause the bios (if set to) to shut the PC down when a critical temp is reached.

Just removed previous paste from CPU and HSF. I have applied fresh paste to the HSF and secured the CPU into the socket.

I'm having trouble getting the HSF to securely sit onto the motherboard. The plugs that it uses to fasten to the board keep on popping out (it seems the plugs are too big??) What can I do? :(

Right, after much fiddling its now securely in and no shutdowns wahoo!!! CPU temp btw is around 47C.

I'm now installing windaz!

Seems to have done the trick re-applying the paste and putting the CPU and HSF back in. Thanks for the advice and support guys!
