I recently upgraded my tired old PC with a new Abit motherboard with AMD athlon 5600+ dual processor and 2gb matched corsair ram. I am running XP pro and all is fine except that randomly the machine just turns itself off. Could this be down to the power supply?? PSU is 400w and not old but I wonder if its just not up to the job and would this cause these problems?
Any help would be great Thanks.

PSU doesnt sound under full load with that setup, although it could generally just be knackered after general use...

The only other thing i can think of is overheating

yeah my first build switched itself off due to cpu overheating - download realtemp and see what your temps are if there around 30 you should be ok. you can run a stress test using something like prime95 to put the cpu under load if it goes past 65 or so halt stress test immediatly and check your cpu heatsink, take off, reapply thermal paste, reseat. maybe clean the dust off or get a better one.

Cpu running around 30 C and board 39 C so heat not being a problem. I have disabled the cool n quiet mode on the bios and will see if this is the issue as it was with another person. So far it hasn't turned off but will need a few days use to properly test. Thanks for all your help and hopefully I won't need to come back.

Looks like a cheap psu and may well not be working to even the small wattage it is always better to get a branded psu and have that little bit of extra piece of mind.

Ive had 600watt power supplies in the past that have failed to power lesser rigs, q-tec anybody? If you have a spare supply laying about I would give it a whirl.
