I had XP on this machine previously everything was fine till somehow I got a load of malware , so decided to do a fresh reinstall and go with Vista.

Motherboard is a GA-965P-DS3P , the OS is installed on the Jmicron RAID controller with 2 disks in Raid 0 - I had to load the drivers for these during Vista install.

I tried to do Windows update and it froze towards the end, now when I get into Vista it'll quickly lock up for a few minutes - any ideas what could be causing this?

No settings have been changed at all , everything running at stock.

Everything seemed fine on install - I haven't touched the BIOS in a long time - will check RAM voltage there shortly.

Full spec :
GA-965P-DS3P
E6300
8800 GTS
2GB RAM (not sure which exactly!)
2 x WD 320GB on Raid 0
2 x Other assorted SATA HDDs

Anyone managed to get this fixed as i am scouring the internet and it seems to be a common problem but i cant find a proper fix for it. I am sure it is a recent update that is causing problems.

Tempted to suspect the RAID array or the drivers for it.

Looks like you have a few random HDDs - can you spare one to do a quick install of Vista on a single drive connected to the Intel SATA ports?

Sorry to sounds stupid but can you elaborate on this please not quite sure what you mean by the Intel Sata Ports

Sorry - I meant one of the ports which isn't connected to the JMicron controller, to rule out a problem with the controller entirely. The JMicron and non-JMicron ports are normally different colours.

The socket 775 system i have does not have those connectors so i dont think that is the problem there.

I am positive that it is something microsoft has done/released that is causing problems.

It does - I used to have that motherboard. :) The purple connectors link to the JMicron. The orange ones don't.

Not sure you follow what I'm saying. I was saying that you could rule out the RAID controller by connecting a single drive to an orange port and installing Vista onto that.

Ah, sorry - confused you with the OP :o

Ruling out the RAID array still might be an idea in the OP's case. As for yours, I don't know. Perhaps try System Restore if it's started recently?
