System locking up

I need some pointers regarding a system problem please. I've been short of time, so diagnostics have been a bit slapdash so far.

The problem is very intermittent. The system was previously stable, but now it's locking up sporadically. Symptoms vary, but the most noticeable hang is when the screen(s) shows nothing but distorted colours and the system freezes. So far, I've run memtest with no errors, I've stress-tested the CPU and the gfx card with no problems (although admittedly for short periods). It also crashes when idling at the desktop unattended. My best guess so far is the gfx card. I've swapped it out with an older card to see if this resolves the issue, but the intermittent nature of the problem means that it could be a while until I'm certain one way or the other. So in the meantime... any ideas please?

It's a Core i5 760 2.80GHz clocked at 3.80GHz. It's been stable for a couple of years. Clocking it back is on my list of things to try. Just looking for obvious culprits at the moment really.
