"System" Process

You can see it at the top of task manger in the screen capture below. It's only appeared recently but it really slows my computer down, over the past couple of days I've been able to restart and its gone away. But its back with avengenance and makes many tasks impossible...

I can't end the process either which is annoying, what is it? Its using a hefty chunk of needed memory.

Have you tried booting into Safe mode? What av have you got? AVG it looks like? Try some anti-spyware stuff like Spybot or Malwarebytes and see if they can help.

Vista? x32 or x64?
 
Are you running an AV (or any anti-malware) or overclocking ?

The SYSTEM process is a normal process, but it shouldn't be using that much memory. It can be affected by drivers. You could also check the Event log and also in Device Manager, to see if there are any obvious errors or malfunctioning drivers.
