system re-start in the night

Right mouse button on My Computer
Go to Manage
That opens up Computer Management

Then there's Event Viewer
that should tell you

what os is it?

xp had a few hotfixes that forced a restart if they were downloaded via windows update

but yes, check event viewer

Are you sure it did not try to sleep or something? If Vista, check power options to see if it's set to sleep after 6 hours or something similar. It could be your PC cant enter sleep correctly.

Hello again another odd nightime parlavour

4am this morning i found my computer with its graphics fan over whirring and no output to the monitor. Booted this morning and its ok. Looking in the event viewer on my pc I do not know under what tab you need the information off as there is lots of stuff in that section. If i can post the right bit someone may know what my problems are.

Sounds to me like it went into hibernation/sleep and didnt wake up. If you do have an event viewer entry post it on here. :)

Check system log (that's where more serious problems are in general) and see are there any entries with time marking fitting to "crashes".

Also are you sure there aren't black/brown outs? Those could easily cause this kind problems.

Check your power options, check it's set to Performance (If this best suits you), and check it's not set to sleep/hibernate after a period of idle time.
