System reboots part way through booting up

I gave my old PC to my brother-in-law after Christmas and he's now telling me that every so often when booting the PC up it get part way through booting up and then re-boots but is then fine.

I've got very limited information beyond the above just now unfortunately.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be wrong?

Borked drivers perhaps? Does booting into safe mode produce the same error?

will get him to check, and backup all his data just in case the HD is on its way out.
