System restore help :s

Everytime i go to load up a system restore from one I have previously made, it goes through the entire process and then loads up after restarting saying, system restore cannot complete the nessasary restore, then goes through another process and im back to square 1 again?

I also having trouble installing some software too, with errors and such, so im thinking of uninstalling service pack 2 and putting 1 on it, or removing SP2 and putting it back on again or something.

I may even just replace all of the windows system files doing a reinstall but not wiping everything.

To be honest im not sure what to do @ this point, any help would greatly be appriciated.

Why are you trying to restore your system? Sounds to me that perhaps the restore points you have set are damaged and Windows can't apply them.

think the best thing you can do is backup everything you want to keep format the drive and do a nice clean install ...update to sp2 before you do anything else just incase you have the same problems .......which im sure you wont

sorry its not my system, its someone elses, i dont really like system restore, i always keep backups, everywhere.
And thats what I told him too, all of the restore points are corrupted, he also says that even most recent ones have gone **** up.
