System Shock 2 - XP

Hi there,

I am trying to get system shcok 2 to work on xp.

Does anyone know a way that it will work?

Thanks.

I've had it working in 2000 compatibility mode. There's also an XP patch out there, but I've had mixed luck with it.

It should install fine, though you might need to use -lgntforce to get it to ignore that it's in win XP. Install the latest patch..enable safe texture manager, disable dual core...

check out http://ttlg.com for more help :)

Yeah great game. Very atmospheric & creepy with plenty of humour as well. I think I shall have another go at it soon. Not sure I fancy struggling with compatibilty-related issues & crashes etc though so I might go the whole hog & dual boot again for a while.

I must just be really lucky as I've never had any problems with the game. If people are trying it and need help I know my way around the usual issues so feel free to ask :)

oki doki I shall give it a try tonight then :)

It's a command you can use (make a shortcut to the install .exe file and then add "-lgntforce" without the quotation marks) to force the the game to ignore that it's being installed on an NT-based operating system (which XP is...hence people having problems).

I actually don't need to use it on XP but when I used to use 2000 it was pretty useful.

The most popular graphics mods are below:

Make sure you make your install "mod ready" if you do plan on using those mods. Details here:

I think the XP workarounds for SS2 are very hardware specific, they work on some machines but not all.

For guaranteed success getting SS2 working again, best to use Win98, for this reason I've built a cheap Athlon 1.4 dual boot 98SE/XP 512mb ram, geforce 3 in my bedroom for older games in 98SE and general surfing in XP.

The high res texture stuff for SS2 seemed a bit buggy to me, a lot more game crashes, but part of the appeal for me, is playing these old games as they were when they came out, SS2, Thief Gold, Thief 2 and Dues Ex all have great repeat playability due to the many different ways you can play them, all I've done to mine is mod them to a more suitable resolution for my bedroom 17" LCD monitor and use a Logitech MX518 for good mouse response.

If you think thats sad, I've also built up an old P200 64mb Dos6.2 box that shares this LCD monitor via a KVM switch, this is used for the original System Shock and Ultima Underworld and Ultima games when i feel like a bit of nostalgia :)

Lol. It's not sad. I can completely see the urge to play things 'how they were' but I'm a bit of a h0 when it comes to such things - I run my snes emu with HQ4x and make use of save states/etc... I'm just evil

The graphics upgrades won't cause crashes, though Rebirth does have a few bugs - such as using corpse models for the living humans right at the start of the game (check out the shop). In general though, both Rebirth and SHTUP provide a very nice upgrade and the latter maintains the original look and 'feel' of the graphics quite rigidly.

I've actually ran SS2 accross quite a multitude of new/old hardware and varying operating systems... I've had minor issues but nothing that can't be solved by a small amount of work. I guess it's a lot easier to say that from the side of having dealt with problems before than the side of "I just tried to install it once and it didn't work" though ;)

everytime i've had SS2 installed i've not had any problems running it in XP?
can't remember if i patched it or not, but it def ran without any command stuff, compatibility mode etc??

heh back in the game again :)

Couldn't get it to run properly on XP until I used the -lgntforce command. I've also patched it, enabled safe_texture_manager & installed SHTUP. It now runs smooth as anything so cheers for the above tips/advice.

Amazingly atmospheric and just as scary as the 1st time I played it :D

It's such a cool game :)

There's a few decent Fan Missions for it atm (Check out "Ponterbee Station" and it's sequal) - with not quite as god-awful voice acting as you might expect from an FM...

Also check out some of the other texture/etc upgrades. There's a new goo model update beta here: http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,178.msg742.html#msg742

And if you're playing it a second time through, I recommend Straylight's ADAOB patch: http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,25.0.html

or TF's SecMod (loads of crazy stuff in this one): http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,143.0.html

And last of all, another decent FM is Arena: http://www.strangebedfellows.de/index.php/topic,135.0.html

Lol :)

Sorry to seemingly spam this thread a lot but SS2 has to be one of the best games ever made...

...anyhow...When I tried XP64 briefly, I'm prety sure SS2 worked on it. The only thing I had to do was enable the safe texture manager. Worth a try at least ;)
