Anyone know where I can get hold of this, have tried the demo from download.com but it crashes, old software v modern hardware. I just hope it becomes available on steam with enhanced looks. This game is the one that got away from me. Warren Spector, a god.

I picked it up from a popular auction site a little while ago. It won't run on a dual core processor, so you have to set it to one core in task manager. That might work on the demo as well.

Great game, make sure you download all the hi rez graphics packs (there are serveral) :)

Awesome game. Probably my favourite of all time. However, the last computer I played it on was a P4 laptop, although it worked perfectly on XP.

Definitely look around on the auction sites/

You can play it on fully modern PCs with just a few tweaks - there's also a widescreen patch for it now so you can chuck it up to nicer resolutions like 1920x1200 :)

awesome game - have my original copy still and I ain't parting with it :D

Better than BioShock hands down.

There are texture packs and model update packs that make the game look pretty ok, google and you should find them. I had it running ok on vista 64, although it took a bit of work.

There are also a load of mods that do things like slow down the deterioration rate on weapons so you need to repair them less, get rid of one kind of monster on a specific level (you'll understand why after you've played it :D) and so on, but play it vanilla first with just the graphical updates.

Specifically, check out http://ttlg.com/ and http://www.strangebedfellows.de/

Major should-haves:

SHTUP (texture upgrades whilst maintaining original feel)
Rebirth Complimented (model upgrades, re-modified to make more like original style)
Straylight's ADAOB (fixes lots of bugs and errors and balances out the items. You may want to avoid this on your first play-through)

Just beware if your looking for somthing scary, or even edgy don't bother. It really didn't deliver for me as opposed to silent hill, and even deadspace.

The gameplay (combat system) is also very dated, with poor ai simple actions and really weak feeling wepons.

I.m.o great in it's day, the suck now.

(I gave it at least 8 hours, and even though I read all the little logs it just reminded me of Doom 3 (story wise) waaay to much)

Edit:

The game is well seeded on the obvious torrent site, with all the mods included. I wouldn't bother buying it as any sales now really won't be making a difference (most likely you'd be getting it second hand anyway!).

It's a game that's difficult to get into so I can see how you might not have enjoyed it if you didn't play it "back in the day". It's also not so much a "jumpy" kind of scariness - more a general atmosphere and mood. The games you mention, whilst good, are quite a different style.

I agree it would feel VERY dated now, but I played it not that long after its release, and it was one of the best game experiences I've had...listening to the logs was like the best part (aside from the midway twist), so well written, so much more interesting than the Bioshock ones, I felt a chill when I heard 'Oh Anatoly...we are not Korenchin...'

The twist was even more genius than Bioshock, and I thought Bioshock's one was pretty clever, both had the right amount of clues.

The atmosphere was so scary, hearing the mutants screaming, especially early on when you knew they could give you quite a beating...and as for jumpiness, I thought I'd cleared an area once, went to press some button, and when the hybrid's shotgun went off behind me on the rears, my mouse went flying across the room and I got hit repeatedly as I retrieved it :P

Its hacking mini game is pretty naff tho...

Yep, I do realise it was made a looong time (in gaming terms) before doom 3, but I or anyone else that didn't play it when it originally came out can't help the fact they've played doom 3 :(

Doom 3 was a good, although brainless, atmospheric shooter, but then thats what it always intended to be and it shamelessly pulls it off.

To liken it to System Shock 2 though is just plain wrong,SS2 was a brilliantly crafted rpg/shooter with far more intricacies to the plot and gameplay.

Yes Doom 3 was in space and involved shooting but thats where the likenesses end,the logs in SS2 are an integral part of the game and are vital to the evolution of the plot, the logs in Doom3 were not vital to the game and could be largely ignored,Doom 3 is a pure shooter,SS2 is a much deeper and involving game.

hey buddy, reread a couple of above posts. I wasn't likening it to doom 3 (which although good-ish was very different in gameplay etc to system shock 2)

What I was saying was the story reminded me of doom 3 a lot. I even half guessed the twist from playing doom 3.

Runs without issue on Dual Core, I have the updated/patched/modernised settings version.

The game may be old but the graphics are still nice but its too hard for me lol.

Now that's what I call a great gaming experience, awesome.
