System shuts down after 6 secs...help?

i recently bought, from OcUK, a huntkey 500W PSU, Leadtek Nvidia 8600GT, 1GB Corsair XMs2 (2 x 512mb), Intel Core 2 Duo E2160 1.8GHZ and a fatal1ty FP-IN9 mobo.
when i boot the system up, all the fans start going the lights come on, and then after 6 secs everything just stops, and also, something that slightly worried me was when, after i turned it all off again, and removed the power cable, i got a huge shock from the plug end.
ive tried moving the RAM about to see if it was that that was causing the problem but unfortunatly no change.
any help would be appreciated, im completley out of my depth here...=/
cheers.

Considering you got a shock...My first guess would be that either the psu has gone, or the cable coming from the wall socket to the psu has blown.

Do you have another pwoer cable you can try? And was it plugged directly into a wall socket, or an extender block?

It would be handy if you had a spare psu to try as well, but obviously not everyone has one of those :)

One suggestion I might make would be that you try what has been suggested in another thread and just disconnect everything bar the psu / cpu and fire up the pc and see if you get a post beep ...

Then start reconnecting everything one by one - firing up the pc inbetween each item to try and rule things out ?

Also if you were to do this with the old psu then it shouldn't be such a problem as long as you don't try running it all with that plugged in as I don't think you would get very far !

Best of luck - and do get back to us with any new info !

Got a long post beep, what order should I put stuff back in? Tried it with just the graphics card and got the same result does that mean that the RAM is dodgy?

A long beep should mean everything passed fine IIRC. Also that 380W PSU is more than capable of powering your system, I bet a 250w would power it fine.

This was tested with the 500w PSU so I guess that is not the problem. Tried the RAM in every possible combination and it just shut off again. Is it the RAM or the mobo that is dodgy?

Got a long post beep

How long? literally a second or what...Cause if you get 3 beeps one after the other, then that normally indicates a RAM error...Sometimes video, but normally ram 9/10.

it was like a 2-3 second beep, just repeated over and over again. left it for about 30sec. to see how long it went on for, just continuous long beeps.

Yeah, I'd say that's your RAM then matey in all honesty :) That's what the beeps tend to mean...And trust me, I've heard them beeps way too many times at work =P

I think you said you tried this anyway...But try every stick of RAM in every slot one by one, by themselves...And see if the problem is the same with all of them, then you can rule out which ones are faulty.

It would be handy if you had a spare stick from another machine or something to try in your system, but that may not be the case :(...On the plus side though, DDR2 RAM is infact reasonably cheap at the moment...

trying to find some DDR2, but it seems to be a bit elusive around here..=/
i only get the beeps when there is no RAM in the mobo at all, whenever i put the RAM in, in any combinations, the system just shuts down after 6 secs, with no beeps at all.

okay, managed to get a 512mb stick of OCz RAM to test to see if it was just the RAM playing up, got exactly the same result as before, i take it that this means its the mobo or something else that is in fact the problem?

I assumed you meant the beeps were an error code with the RAM installed, with no RAM of course you'll get a RAM error.

Problem seems a little deeper, maybe you damaged the mobo or something? sounds like your "shock" hurt more than your hand?
