Hopefully some one will shed some light on a problem that's been driving me crazy for about a year now.

My system never seems to start up first go. Hit the power button wait a few seconds for the system to tell the monitor to turn on but nothing happens. The monitor doesnt register I've just turned on the system and stays in standby mode.

Also the system will not start up when i've got my external HD plugged in. It'll stop at startup until I unplug the drive then it'll carry on the startup.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance

Have you tried the monitor on another system? It's the first thing i'd check to eliminate the monitor itself. Then check the cable. See if you can get a replacement.

Once you eliminated the monitor and cable, the next port of call if the graphics adaptor. Check that the card is fitted securley, that it has adequate power and you are using the correct drivers.

Cheers for the replies. I've had the monitor and cable replaced recently (dell 20" Wide Screen). The Dell before this did this also. The cable is also new. I'll try the regular VGA cable though.

A few days back I stripped the computer and rebuilt entirely so I know every things fitted securely.

oops.... Hiper 580 Modular atx2.2

are the voltages stable.. run motherboard monitor or something simular to check. I'm just wondering if the power is dropping to the card, therefore no signal.

Also, it might worth taking that TV card out and install the drivers for it.

Just to eliminate any conflicts etc..
