System Thread Exception Not Handled

My PC is unusable right now as I get the BSOD with 'System Thread Exception Not Handled' message shortly after logging in (couple seconds after desktop appears, screen blinks a couple times then BSOD)

It happened a few times a couple weeks ago and I though it may be the memory but memtest reported no issues.

Google suggests it may be display driver related, so i have attempted to boot into safe mode to uninstall driver, but here i have run into a problem. Booting from the windows 8.1 install disk I am trying to enable safe mode from the command prompt as explained in this thread here - http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/faq/id-1653141/fix-system-thread-exception-handled-error-windows.html
When i get into the command line, and change to c: drive, it appears that there is no data on the C drive at all, just says 0 files and 240gb space.
So to me it looks like the PC is intermittently not seeing the data on the C drive? could this be the cause of my issues?

I am intending to A) check all sata leads are firmly attached (I use the ones with the catches though) then B) re-install windows

Anyone got any better ideas? this is driving me nuts now.

OK, just to update I have managed to boot into safe mode (not too hard - thanks Google) and uninstall the old gfx card drivers.
Interestingly I was on the 14.6 drivers already.
I used driver fusion to flush the old files out then re-installed 14.6 again.
All seems fine now - no BSOD - yet.
Interestingly, windows reports driver version 14.2 from the control panel/device manager window, yet MSI Afterburner shows 14.6 installed. Strange

I'm still convinced there's something else wrong with my pc. Time will tell I guess. My PC did get pretty toastie on Saturday night, both 290's were hitting mid 80's, so maybe that has caused my issues?
I have had my 4770k overclock backed off to 4.3 for a while now but if the system stays stable i'll whack it back up to 4.5 and see how it goes.
