Recently bought a new system for a friend and put it all together fine.
AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 955 Black Edition 3.20GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail
GA-870A-UD3 AMD 870 (Socket AM3) DDR3 Motherboard
Patriot Viper 4GB (2x2GB) PC3-10666 1333MHz Dual Channel (PVS34G1333ELK)
FSP Everest 600W Modular Power Supply
Antec 300 Three Hundred Ultimate Gaming Case - Black
OcUK 22x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM
I reused his card from his existing system, an ATi 5770. Initially it was all great except he would have texture problems on left 4 dead causing CTD's at seemingly random intervals. Through the course of the past week, it got worse and worse to the point where Windows wouldn't even boot.
It's now back with me and I've done a complete Windows reinstall. Installed the 10.7 drivers and tested the 5770 on 3D06. CTD with a D3DERR_DEVICELOST message. Uninstalled and dropped to 10.1. Same problem. Put my old, known working, X1900 in and tried it on 10.1. Same problem. Dropped drivers back to 9.1. Same problem.
I also ran furmark and IBT to stress the PSU and they both ran fine without problems for an hour.
I'm thinking it's the motherboard but I can't prove it. I refuse to believe it's purely a driver problem. Any thoughts?
