Just had this computer (from ocuk) a couple of weeks and it's my first time with win 8.1.

What I'm seeing is that sometimes - rarely - the computer turns itself on even though I've gone through shutdown [not sleep].

I know that things can wake the computer from sleep/hibernate but I wasn't aware of this behavior. I'd really like off to mean off.

It does seem to occur when there windows updates (like today) but how does the computer even know when it's powered off. Maybe this is just a coincidence.

Could it be a power supply issue? Randomly making a relay connection... I have the superflower 550w. Or bad motherboard? I did have issues with this computer when I first got it but that turned out to be bad memory (has been stable since then).

I've told intel smart connect not to wake the computer so it's not that (whatever it is).

-edit-

Also I'm using usb wireless so I don't think there is even an internet connection when the computer is shut down. It's defintely shut down (done some more reading and standby is something else).

Try going into BIOS options and checking if Wake on LAN is enabled
Also, if you want you could take out the power switch cable from the motherboard out, and see if you have a faulty cable/power switch
A USB trigger can sometimes wake it too, my mouse does it so I turned "ErP" on. Try taking the dongle out when you turn the PC off, and possibly your other USB peripherals such as keyboard and mouse

It's so infrequent (days in between) I can't really test it like that.

I looked in the bios and all the wake-on stuff is set as disabled and some option that is either bios or OS is set to bios.

Is there any negative to turning on that EuP (same thing as ErP?) option in bios?

Hmm, you could just do a full BIOS reset or clear CMOS to fully reset the settings in the BIOS and before note down any overclock settings you have so you don't loose them

Not sure about EuP being the same as ErP. For me, all ErP does it with it disabled, the power button on the motherboard itself (my board has a hardware power button on the board itself) stays illuminated, and with ErP enabled that button doesn't illuminate

I haven't noticed any drawbacks to be honest apart from that, but I haven't looked into it massively

I don't have any overclock (cpu is 4590). I'm very ignorant about this stuff so I'm leary of doing too much in the bios but I'd like to avoid RMA my computer over something trivial.

What does clear cmos mean?

I've turned on EuP 2013 I'll see how that goes :)

Reset the BIOS - either by taking the battery out for 10 mins or shorting two pins together on the motherboard.
