System upgrade advice

You have one month from upgrading to downgrade. Go to update and security in Win10. Go recovery and there should be some sort of option to roll back to previous win version. Then reinstall original win version on new PC. Not sure at this point if it will let you upgrade to win10 again though..

hmm. I think you're kinda screwed. when you do the free upgrade to w10, the hardware ID of the machine is sent to Microsoft and added to their "licenced machines" database. you can freshly install as many times as you like on that machine and it'll activate automatically cos Microsoft knows the hardware ID

But. If you're building up a new PC then you won't be able to activate w10 on it because the hardware ID will be different. Like Jinxter said, it's possible that downgrading back to w8 first, then installing w8 on the new PC, then doing the w10 upgrade might work. But I think it's unlikely. I think you'll have to buy a new windows licence for the new machine.

The good news is that the licence doesn't have to be for w10 - you can buy a w7/8/8.1 licence and then do the free upgrade, and they're available quite cheaply from various sources.

the other thing you could try would be to phone Microsoft and explain the situation, they might help you activate on the new pc if they are feeling generous. it's unlikely but worth a shot

Thanks guys, spent 45 mins on the phone to Microsoft and didn't get answered so looks like I'm going to have to buy a new key. I have the second pc up and running now.installing drivers and stuff.
Can you recommend somewhere to purchase a product key for windows 7 home premium?

Hi, due to forum rules we aren't allowed to post competitor prices.

Could try asking in the software forum but the thread might be deleted.

Might try fleabay and google etc. Good luck :)

Ok cheers. I'll have a look around.
The two boys are well pleased with their new machines, they're trying all their games on the highest setting and are well pleased with the results, so could I say a big thank you to anyone who helped, especially jinxter who came up with the hardware suggestion.

Cheers guys

You're very welcome fman and it's good to hear they're pleased with their upgrades. Must be a world apart from what they had been using. Glad to be of assistance :)

With regards to a new OS there are a lot of key sites which sell games too that offer keys for Win7/8 which you can use to upgrade to Win10. I've seen some very cheap. Can't obviously tell you which one as it's against the rules ;)
