System upgrade for VR on Index?

I want to upgrade my aging system ( i7 4770k / 16GB / GTX 1080 ) to better enjoy Boneworks e.t.c on my Index.

I am thinking an AMD 3900x or 3950x / 32 GB / 2080, but not sure which mobo to go with. Is AMD a good choice currently? If so is the 3950x worth the premium over the 3900X for VR gaming? If not which Intel cpu and mobo would people recommend?

when you say better enjoy, presumably you mean a higher frame rate? There's probably others here playing Boneworks with a 1080 and an Index but different CPU. If they can tell you what settings they can achieve then it'll give you a good idea of the gains you can expect.
A 4790k with 8 cores/threads at 4.4Ghz is still very capable.

Yes a higher, more stable and consistent framerate would be great, as well removal of the CPU bottleneck and the ability to comfortably make use of 120 and 144Hz. I can play without too much issue with the current system, albeit at lower settings than I'd like, but when things get busy and the framerate varies I feel quite queasy sometimes and I've been looking for an excuse to upgrade.

If you want the best framerate on your Index get a cheaper CPU and a more expensive GPU.

EDIT: I am presuming that you have a budget and that's why you are going to for the 2080 over the 2080Ti.

Tbh I just want to make sure the 3900x or possibly 3950x ( I don't see the point in spending almost twice as much on the CPU if it won't benefit my VR gaming ) is a good choice over an Intel and if so maybe get a few motherboard recommendations.

If it's mainly for VR get the 3900, don't think the 3950 will bring anything to the table. I don't think there is much point in getting anything over the 3700X for VR. But, who knows what the future might bring. So if you have the budget get the 3900.

As for motherboard, do you like to overclock? Or just run at stocks settings for the most part? The x570 motherboards are all solid boards. Pick the one with the features you think you will need and use. There is a good selection between £200 and £300 that should suit you. The Asrock Taichi is a popular choice.

I actually do dabble a little in overclocking, but I won't be chasing any records. I have had similiar advice from elsewhere about the CPU so I'll settle for the 3900 and if the Asrock Taichi you mention is capable of some mild overclocking I'll go with that.

Another question I have is about RAM, I know the 3950x benefits from 3600Mhz+, does the same apply to the 3900x?
