Hi all

After some advise please. I want to try to upgrade only my motherboard and CPU from an existing P4 rig to maybe a dual or quadcore (faster if can be done with existing components and not to expensive).

I want to spend around £200.

This is a second rig to an i7 and doesn't need to be overpowerful. Mainly for internet browsing, odd game and running music apps (Cubase and various plugings). Currently it runs too slow now for the calibre & amount of software/plugins being used at one time.
(Running XPx32 which again is fine for this rig, but may go W7 x32 in future)
I don't really want to have to upgrade my graphics card or memory unless very cheap. Idealy I only want to update motherboard, processor and memory if I really have to.

Thanks

You'll need new everything bar the case I'm afraid. That x1950 is AGP so can't be reused. What brand and model for the PSU? Also I can see 3 PATA devices there which is a problem since most modern mobos have support for only 2.

The pata runs of an ISA expansion card.

I think with the gfx this is going to mount up in price :?

Still looking. . .

Checked the PSU it's a Zalman Z500Watt.
Guess the case and possibly the psu then guys. Thanks for the references though...big hep.

Thanks

Thanks for the advice the AMD Athlon II X4 Quad Core 635 2.90GHz and Intel Core i3 530 2.93GHz (Clarkdale) options seem very viable...going to check some eprformance reviews between the 2 cpus (not very clued into post P4 and pre i7 processors).

Guessing with these I will be looking at more cash for a suitable PSU and graphics card (the HDs arent an issue got several SATAs kicking around).

Thanks again
